Japanese Geography Flashcards

2014-03-03

While planning motorcycle rides, I realized it would be great to know more about Japan's geography. To paraphrase from Wikipedia...

The prefectures of Japan are the country's 47 first-order subnational jurisdictions on a state or provincial level: one metropolis, Tokyo; one territory, Hokkaido; two urban prefectures, Osaka and Kyoto; and 43 other prefectures. Prefectures are governmental bodies larger than cities, towns, and villages. The former provinces of Japan were converted into prefectures at the start of the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

It has been noted that pictures are effective on flashcards. I grabbed a bunch of maps of regions and prefectures in Japan from Wikimedia Commons and from them made an Anki deck.

There are fifty-five notes, one for each geographical area. The front of each card shows a map with the target area shaded. The back shows the area name in kanji, kana, and English. As usual, the fields are customizable. You can make the images smaller, for cell phone use. If you're content with just the English, there's no need to display the Japanese. All the maps are in public domain. The deck itself is under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License.
